Roberto Roizenblatt, MD, PhD, FASRS
Dr. Roberto Roizenblatt is one of the premier retina surgeons in the Los Angeles area. He received his medical degree from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, ranked number 1 in the country, where he grew up. He went on to complete his medical internship in internal medicine at Jacobi Medical Center in New York. Dr. Roizenblatt successfully completed two 3-year residencies in ophthalmology, at the Federal University of Sao Paulo and later at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Roizenblatt trained in a competitive two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Federal University of Sao Paulo in which he benefited from a high volume of complex cases. Following being awarded his PhD focusing on biometric iris recognition systems, he completed post-doctorate work for two years at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California. It was during this time that he was a member of the team that developed the world's premier retinal prosthesis, an FDA approved implantable device intended to restore visual function for the blind.
Dr. Roizenblatt has authored and co-authored multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals. He enjoys performing complex vitreoretinal surgeries with areas of surgical interest which include retinal detachment repair, retinal complications of anterior segment surgery, macular surgery and diabetic retinopathy, among others. Dr. Roizenblatt is an expert reviewer for Ophthalmology at the California Medical Board and is a journal reviewer for the premium journals Ophthalmology Retina and Journal of Vitreoretinal Diseases.
Dr. Roizenblatt is the first US ophthalmologist to have obtained the title of Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the Education Committee at Los Alamitos Medical Center and holds a prestigious position as member of the Credentials Committee at the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is licensed by the Medical Board of California, board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and participates in maintenance of certification, which requires conference attendances and continuous medical knowledge testing.
Dr. Roizenblatt previously served as a medical and surgical retina specialist at DLP Eye Group in Los Angeles and South Coast Retina Center, and has built an upscale practice in the Long Beach area, where he is the Chair of Ophthalmology at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, the flagship hospital of the Memorialcare Medical Group.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Roizenblatt enjoys spending time with his family and friends and is an avid tennis player and cheers for the Lakers.
